1950's
1954- Interested sportsmen of the area called a meeting for May 3, 1954. A large number attended and the Hermansville Sportsman's Club was named and organized. They chose William J. Anderson, former scoutmaster and well-known sportsman, as its first president; Harold Stecker became its secretary, and Eugene Arduin Sr. its treasurer.

1955- The Hermansville Sportsman's Club became affiliated with Michigan United Conservation Clubs, but several years later left MUCC to become an independent club. That year they also joined with the American Legion Post #340 in planning and promoting the annual July 4th celebration and annual dance.

1957- The Club supported the efforts of member Cyril Menard to raise pheasants to release in the wild. Another 100 young pheasants were released in 1968.

 

1960's
1960-
In co-operation with the DNR, a number of club members went to the Seney Wildlife Refuge to fish for Northern Pike, which the DNR transported to Hermansville, making it the first planting of Pike in Hermansville Lake. There were 147 species in this initial planting. That year the club held a fishing derby with many prizes award.

1962- The sportsmen and Legion members constructed eight portable game stands, now used annually for the July 4th celebrations. It was that year also that the club started improvements of the Hermansville beach and park.

Club Name Change 1962
The name of the organization was changed to William Anderson Sportsman's Club in honor of its first president, who died in office in 1955.

1966- The club became the sponsor of the Cub Scouts in the area, with 38 boys enrolling. The program was continued for several years. During the winter of 1966-67 the members organized several rabbit hunts, the meat being used for Club dinners.

In the Summer of 1966- the club negotiated with the fish department of the DNR for the planting of 8,000 bluegill and 3,000 bass in Hermansville Lake.

In the Winter of 1966- The Club planned its first snowmobile derby, which was held on Hermansville Lake. The Club continued to promote this annually for seven years. Three years on the Hermansville Lake and four years at Girard Ayotte's field on the vega road. By 1972 interest in derbies had waned and the event was discontinued.

1966 Cont. A group of concerned Upper Peninsula citizens organized a search and rescue team. They purchased two bloodhounds for tracking purposes, with the home base being in Dickinson County. The Club totally supported this Organization.

1967- The Club learned from DNR fish biologist NED Fogle that fish can be saved from winter kill, due to lack of oxygen, by using outboard motors to a 100 foot radius on the ice. This method worked very well and has been used by club members during years when severe winterkill was imminent. The club purchased a power auger to bore holes in the ice, and also an oxygen sampling kit to test the water in winter.



1970's
1970-
The Club implemented some stream improvement projects on the headwaters of the Big Cedar River.

1971- The Club purchased from Harnischfeger Corporation of Escanaba a 20 ft. by 50ft. tent which was used for the annual July 4th festivities and picnics. It was also available to local citizens for special private events. The Club fostered a large deer feeding operation in an attempt to save many deer from starvation during that year's severe winter. Many tons of hay and corn were used. Because of the large accumulation of records and correspondence the Club purchased a typewriter and filing cabinet in 1971. Since 1971 the club has paid for subscriptions of National Wildlife, International Wildlife, and Ranger Rick for the libraries of the North Central Area School District.

1972- One of the Club projects was the construction of a swimming float (raft) on the lake, which replaced the previous raft that was destroyed by vandals. a 12ft square, 2ft thick piece of Styrofoam was boxed in with 2" lumber.

1972 cont- The Club purchased the former Croatian Lodge building and some additional adjacent land, In 1974, members of the Club replaced one half of the addition to the building, including a partial basement a kitchen, two restrooms and storage room, in addition to the renovation of the main building. A lean-to warehouse was added to the north end of the main building for storage of various landscaped, a well drilled, water extended to the building, and a hand pump placed outside for park use. Guardrails and gates were erected to protect the Club grounds, beach and park. by the end of 1978 the work on the building was near completion and ready for use and rental. It was at this time that the Club presented member Edward Malone with an award and plaque for the many services, time and material given in the renovation of the Club building.
To add entertainment to the Clubs Meetings, a 16mm sound projector and screen were purchased in 1974.

1975- The Club purchased two air rifles for members to use, and an indoor rifle range will soon be constructed in the building. Also that year, Club officials prevailed upon Mr. G. Harold Earle to donate the park and beach area to the township, which is now very popular with the local and surrounding area citizenry.

1976-77- The water level in Hermansville Lake was at its lowest on record. During that winter, because of low water and heavy ice cover, practically all the fish in the lake died for lack of oxygen. The DNR was enjoined to check the lake and plant more fish. It was found that the lake still had bullheads and a small number of perch and northern pike. The DNR stocked the lake in 1978 with 4,000 bass and added 240 northern pike in 1979.

1978- Hermansville Lake celebrated its centennial and the William Anderson Sportsman's Club joined two other civic organization in promoting the community's largest and most successful celebration. Over 4,000 former resident, their families and friends attended the July 1st to 4th festivities.

1978 cont.- A tree memorial was also created, (this was one of John Malone's projects) which was supported by many local citizens, resulting in the planting of 166 trees throughout the community. A plaque commemorating this project has been erected in Memorial Park on First Street. Types of tree planted included Norway maple, Scarlet maple and Red Royalty Crab.

1979- The Cub participates annually in litter pickup, beach and park maintenance, improving wildlife habitat and promoting good conservation of our resources. The club planted 1000 autumn Olive seedlings for wildlife.

 

1980's
1987-
The club was researching the possibilities of making a walking trail at the old dumpsite and in the very near future (2004) we are going to prevail and make this walking trail a reality.

The Club has donated to the American Legion for their Christmas party for many years. We also donate to Community Action, North Central Area Schools, the rescue Squad and Fire Department.

July 1987- Women were permitted to join the Club.

June 1988- members were permitted to rent the Club for $25.00 for immediate family gathering if they were members for 6 months or more.

1988-89- The Club sold chicken dinners on the 4th of July to raise money. The Club along with the American Legion has sponsored the July 4th celebration. It was originally held on First Street but was later moved to the Hermansville Lake and Park. With the combined efforts of the William Anderson Sportsman's Club and the American Legion on July 4th celebration became much larger event, which included the mud runs, live music, beverages and food. There are also games for all ages.

June 1989- The floor was poured in the pavilion, which added extra entertainment space to The Club.

 

1990's
1990-
The DNR built and placed a platform in a pine tree out by the point for the bald eagle nest.

1992- The outside of the clubhouse was painted and Glenn Warbis donated the paint.

Though the years there have been speakers invited to our meetings from the DNR to speak on deer management, fishing and other conservation topics.

1997- The Club purchased the doors from St. Mary's for the clubhouse. (In 2004, Tim Meiner painted them and they are pretty.

September 1998- The Sports and Recreation Club was asked to merge with the William Anderson Sportsman's Club. The name was changed to the William Anderson Sport and Recreation Club, Inc. To recognize the joining of the two clubs in 1999.

1999- The members started a Wild Game Feed. It was a great success and became an annual event and gets bigger very year.

 

2000's
2001-
The Club purchased picnic tables for the park. Club members made a stage to be used at the park for the July 4th celebration and other music festivals.

2002- The Club built an aerator to be used in the Hermansville Lake to hopefully stop the winter kill of fish.

2003- The Club got an estimate for new windows and siding for the clubhouse. Tim Meiner installed the windows and a contractor was hired to put up the siding. New wood duck housed were donated and was put up that winter.

2004- New siding was installed and Tim Meiner and other remolded the bathrooms and front entrance. Glenn Warbis donated new flooring for the bathrooms and kitchen.


2004- The Club Celebrated its 50th Year of Existence.
